Yep your right hf just so disheartening when its all the babies, but (at the risk of upsetting people) we have a man that just loathes foxes and says the only good fox is a dead one (which at the moment i agree with) he is as we type, sitting in our old caravan waiting for them to return, up in our paddock.
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

Thank you to you all for you kind words.
As i say i will not give up and that piece of vermin will not get the better of me!!!!! I know its the nature of the beast.
I love all my chooks but the ducks have stolen my heart, so onwards and upwards as they say.
I had only said to hubby this morning as we got up how quiet it was, couldn't hear even the chooks crowing, must have been a sign then, that something was wrong.

Sorry to hear that Nails. We've just rebuilt our electric fence because neighbours had lost everything. As to why they kill everything - it's because in a natural setting they would come back and take the carcases, burying what they couldn't eat. If they just took one, the others would be off and tomorrow the fox would be hungry. As chicken keepers we're fighting nature, be it red mite, foxes or broody hens. Please keep on.

I'm so sorry for your loss nails. Although its hard to lose any chuck/duck, I think its always harder when its babies.

Would you like to borrow the dog? Right now the score stands at - fox kills 2 chucks. Dog kills 2 foxes.

I'll be thinking of you.

Sorry to hear of your loss Nails.
We lost a rooster this morning. - Under the bedroom window at 8.00am.
I heard it squawking. i looked through the window and saw the fox heading off across the paddock with it in his mouth. I got the dogs out and they went in every direction but the right one.
Still I'd rather it have the rooster than put poison down. Here they put out a product called foxoff. They eat it and over 24 hours it slowly but surely depletes it's whole body of oxygen. They climb trees in terror as they slowly stop breathing. It's the most disgusting thing on the planet and the Government refuse to ban it.
My Kelpie got a taste of it or snailbait some years ago. She started shivering and twitching one morning . It was a twenty minute drive to the vet. They put her on a drip and I stayed with her out the back room. She sweated so much there was a constant rivulet running across the floor. I kept talking to her and after 12 hours i took her home.  She got better thanks to the vets who were really critical of foxoff.
They reckon she would have only got a lick as anything more is always fatal. Still we are not sure what it was. Could have been snailbait. She is 16 years old now and is artheritic but still a good old dog.

This is very true foxes bury their kills.  We had a sand menage in which a fox used to bury pheasants.  After a windy day we'd find a wing sticking out of the sand or a leg!
