Cause for concern?
« on: June 27, 2007, 22:26 »
Clary, our Bovan Nera, started laying 5 weeks ago and has since provided us with a daily egg (2 in one day about 2 weeks ago)

BUT......she hasn't laid now for 2 days and am wondering if i should be concerned :?

She seems her usual self and is eating and drinking as normal, so is she just having a rest or could it be something else :?:

Mary, our trusty warren is still laying so can't imagine it could be stress.....any ideas?

She is still young so may not have got right into the swing off egg layng , but I would check the house for red mites and check the hens for lice.

Have you wormed them recently,  if not I would.

Keep an eye on her for any odd behavious like broodieness.  And check to  see if she has a nest somewhere else like inder a bush.

Both chooks came already wormed when I bought them at POL 2 months ago....so are they due for a top up?

Will check for red mite in morning. Had a quick look for lice this evening...are there any parts of the birds they tend to congregate on more?

I don't think she's laid anywhere else as she's been in the extended run (with nestbox access).

Will check out the signs of broodiness if none of the above applies.

Thanks once again for the sound advice :D

Around vent, neck and under wings are the most common places for lice.

She sounds as if she just needs a little time to settle down.

Worm every 3-4 months depending on your risk.

Few hens - low risk

Many hens - high risk

When I opened the coop this morning Clary had laid an egg under the perch......maybe while she was asleep  :!:

The egg was much paler and bigger than normal and had a rough texture.

When I left for work she was in the nest box...........when I got home I found what looked to be egg white in the nest box and the remains of yolk on Clary's head :o

No sign of the shell this time (she ate a soft shelled egg a couple of weeks ago) so I wonder if this one was shell-less :?:

No lice or mites, will buy some flubenvet for worms.

 Not a boring hobby is it :!:

Give her some extra oyster and a little cod liver oil.
