Where have my runner beans gone
« on: July 16, 2010, 10:53 »
Plenty flowers on my plants but it looks as if flower "stalks/stems" have been stripped bare and I have no beans on the lower parts of the plant. Can't find any insects etc. Well watered and fed.Any ideas please

slugs & snails?
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

It's not unusual for the early bean flowers to fail to set, particularly if it is either too hot or too windy! ( :nowink:)

I have known sparrows to peck the ends out of the flowers but luckily it doesn't seem to be a habit they have all got into!

The result is the same; bare flower stalks.

Things should get better when the weather calms down a bit, although it's a lot of work for just the bumble bees and other insect pollinators as I've hardly seen any honey bees round here this year.  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Make sure the plants are never short of water or you will give them another excuse to drop their flowers before they have "done their stuff!"  ;)

I'm sure this has been mentioned before on here - but there are more than one type of bee and some will bury themselves into the back of the flower and stop it forming a bean. Later in the year, hopefully now, the more beneficial bee will pollinate the flowers and beans should start coming.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think I an right in saying that beans are mainly self pollinating so bees help but are not essential.

High temperatures are the problem. Mine you, if every flower made a bean you would soon be complaining of a glut.

Of the dozen or so flowers on a stalk it is usual to get between 3 and 6 beans.
