brassica unattended over winter
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:55 »
I have a rised plot 16' x 8' and for the last 2 years I have covered the plot with pond liner as we travel to the warmth of Spain for the first 3 months of the year.

My question is; can I plant out brassica in slots cut in the pond liner before we leave just after Christmas and get a result when we return  in April?

Doug...

What brassicas do you intend planting?

Those for April harvest and onwards, such as spring cabbage, caulis, broccoli etc want to be well under way before Christmas.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If I started them in pots or possible move some I have now in the ground but at the moment very young, would that work?

You can certainly start spring cabbage & caulis about now, I pop one seed to a cell in a seed tray insert, then pot up. Planted out around September time. The brocolli has been in for some time now.

The problem I can see is the pond liner will stop the water getting to the soil, it would work better with porous weed suppressant fabric

related question: I have broccoli which need to overwinter. Trouble is the average temperature here is well below freezing from Dec - Feb and only warms up in March. What should I do to protect my brocs?
You think it's cold where you live?
