no council allotments aren't free. as far as i can gather the price for an allotment varies with the size and the area you live in. don't know if anyone on this site has done a comparative study on it tho.

we pay £30+£5 for water that is for a plot  one eighth of an acre.  The plots are owned by a local charity so we have to run them ourselves and deal with a land agent.

Wow! That's outragiously expensive. Our plots are run by a Trust and they've just put the rent up from £32 to £50 p.a. for 11yds x 33yds. And everyone's moaning about that!

With ours, we have to buy a couple of pound shares and then it's £11 a year for a plot (either 1/16th or 1/8th of an acre).

I know Hilary i can't quite believe how anyone rents a space on this land. I'm trying to be more self sufficient i wouldn't get anywhere by growing here. By the time i bought everything else for the allotment, could you imagine ??!!

Mine is council run and is 188 sq metres  £48 including the use of a shared tap. The plots are all similar sized but are different prices depending on if you have  your own tap and then charged by the sq metre. Discount is given for oap, I do not know how much cheaper it is for them.

Ours is run by the Council but the land was actually passed to them by a woman many years ago and is held in Trust only to be used as allotments :D.  We have a plot which is approximatly 30ft x 90ft, and there are two sets of prices - one for half a plot and one for a full plot.  It also depends on whether you work, out of work or retired.  My hubby is retired and has a full plot and at the moment he pays roughly £50 which includes insurance, and there is water on tap, but its a bit of a walk to our nearest tap - but there is talk that the Council wants to double the price - I wonder why   Probably because there's a waiting list and they hope to get more money out of people - I wouldn't mind so much, but we first rented ours five years ago, and we had the pick of many plots, but now everyone wants one.

My new plot is a full one (approx 140ft by 19 ft) and usually would cost me £18 rent + £2 association fee. But as it's rather overgrown and hasn't been cultivated in a long while I didn't have to pay the rent this year. Bargain!  :D

Mine's exactly the same size and costs me £20 a year including water.
It's on a private site, run by allotment committee, on land rented from a local farmer.
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....
