Thought it was too late for carrot root fly.  Thats why late sowing, early june , is good for carrots. Or am I wrong again ?

You avoid the first flush that way, but still have the second in July/August to worry about.

Oh, happy joy, deep deep happy joy

I pulled some lovely Early Nantes carrots yesterday from my raised bed full of home made compo, sand and leafmould. Some big ones too  :D  Not a hole in any of them which I put down to them being covered with Enviromesh

I used cut some baton style last night and am doing some in a soup for tonight's tea

i took one out at a time to see when would be the best time to pick them and so far it seems i have no carrot flies. there are no holes in the carrots and unaware of it i have kept them covered up in soil and no net i thought afterwards if the carrots were visible then the carrot fly would do its business.. latest one i pulled out was just over 10cm

so far fingers crossed no carrot flies  8)

Please can I ask a silly (?) question.  Where does the carrot fly lay it's eggs? ??? Is it in the soil, the foliage or actually on the top of the carrot nearest the air?

hi livinhope,

done a bit of reading from my books, its the scent of the carrot that attracts them and it lays its eggs in the soil close to them. think i better stop pulling my carrots out now

Ah! so I'm not being daft when, having pulled a few, I push and firm the soil back around the others.  Thanks for that :)
