Storing scab potatoes?
« on: July 13, 2010, 00:45 »
My Pentland Javelin did not come out as clean as i would have liked for storing. They are between the size of a large egg to as big as an adult fist but they are nearly all contaminated with scab. This is the slightly damp corky type of scab and the potatoes have grown into irregular shapes - I don't know if this is to do with it.

The question is, if i dry these off well on a hot dry day do tyou think they will store in a potato sack or will I go back to a sloppy smelly mess in a month or so?

Its a shame to just throw them but my First Earlies (Orla) came out beautifully clean and we are busy eating those at the moment so my PJs need to be stored really.

Just remember that these are earlies and will not store for long periods. Scab is not an issue, we have very sandy soil and pretty much every spud that comes up is scabby, my mains will last through until march-may next year with scab on them.

PJ are an early spud, but I've found they store quite well.

One of the chaps on our site only grows them ans stores them as he can get them in and out before the blight strikes.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
