Loss of Courgette flowers
« on: July 11, 2010, 16:56 »
Hi
I have grown courgettes for the first time this year in a pot ( thanks to Johns book) and it was doing really well with loads of flowers. Suddenly 5 of them just dropped off. Is this due to lack of water. Am worried I am over watering as its constantly wet, especially since the flowers keeled over and died! Any thoughts  :)
thanks Anne

Male or female flowers?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The female flowers have a small courgette behind them.

All flowers will eventually drop off, hopefully the females will leave the courgette behind!

No - they need to 'do their job' so as to speak (it's a bloke thing you understand). When they get old they'll just drop off by themselves (too many similarities between veg and umans).

Actually, if you've got lots of male flowers and pollination isn't a probelm then you can pick them off as they taste great raw in salads, or battered and deep-fried, or even stuffed.

Thanks for that. Clearly most of my flowers are male. I have another courgette in the process of developing but thats about it. I presume its luck of the draw and there is nothing i can do to affect the sex off the flowers
then

Oi!  It's not their fault if they don't do their job properly, they need a helping hand (a bee or friendly human with a little paintbrush!)  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

The flowers need to be pollinated, if they are not they will drop off. This is normal early in the season until pollination insects make themselves busy.

I am in the same boat. The flowers drop off after I have the sprinkler on the garden. No courgettes form.

There are now a couple of courgette varieties that do not need pollination to set fruit.
Parthenon F1 and Cavili F1. These two have a “parthenocarpic” habit, which means that they are claimed to be able to set fruit without pollination. This would be useful if you are growing under cloche protection or in a greenhouse.
I have grown Cavili outside this year and it was the first of three varieties to produce courgettes. It does produce male flowers but the females seem to set first time.

I'm growing  Parthenon and find that some of the fruit only seem to fatten and be dark green to about halfway, the other half stays skinny and yellow, as if it should fall off, but doesn't. So this variety is better for setting than my ordinary ones, but it is not foolproof :(

So I will continue to grow the ordinary ones as well, just a couple of Parthenon for those early sowings  8)
