Chicken Needs Glasses :O
« on: July 10, 2010, 11:14 »
My little girl the one who has been missing, and bullied and was the first to lay, has suddenly got 2 cloudy pupils, like u see in a dog when it goes blind. I took her to the vet yesterday who wasnt too sure onwhat it was but she assumes its cataracts, she will be calling me back on monday after talking to a specialist, i was wondering if any1 else had the same thing ? shes the only 1 who has it, she;s almost always on her own, doesnt rush around for treats such as rice or bread or even corn occasonally, even if i put it infront of her ?

Thanks

How does she stand? Does she have a wing drooping? Has she lost weight? How old is she? Please get your vets to check for Mareks which is a herpes virus infection.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Cataracts wouldn't develop suddenly I wuldn't have thought. They take years in humans and are a condition of aging predominately. It sounds much more like she has an infection.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

there are hundreds of bacterial infections that animals can get.  I had two chickens that got eye infections because they don't perch and as their heads were so close to the bedding (they are sablepoot bantams) the bedding infected their eyes. Several courses of antibiotics, then eye swabs were taken and antibacterial eye drops were prescribed. Now they sleep on a slatted floor so no bedding gets near their heads and no more problems.

My  suggestion is just that a suggestion for the vet to consider as there are several forms of Mareks - one of which the Chronic form is encountered as the neural or the ocular type. Hopefully it isn't this but the vet should be able to rule this out.

get them to take swabs like my vet did (the results only took a few days) and then mine had eye drops which I found re-markedly easy to administer (a lot easier than putting eye drops in my sons eyes when he had conjunctivitis anyway  ). The eye drops I had prescribed were a human medication for ear infections but luckily they worked   .
Good luck tomorrow and fingers crossed. Keep us posted please.

Hi , I read this post with interest when you mentioned a drooping wing, I have one girl who is just over a year old, she seems perfectly fine and healthy, nice red comb and wattle, eats well realy bright in herself exept she has one wing which has started to droop down. She can fly up onto the garden table OK I have felt the joint and she doesn`t flinch and both joints on iether side feel the same , she just lets it drop a little not all the way to the ground but just a little then lifts it up and slowly drops it !I did wonder if she has just fallen badly or been in a fight its been like this for about two weeks, any ideas ? all our other ladies are OK ( except the two broody ones driving me nuts !!!!! ).........Shirley

If it is an infection then it appears to be behind the conjuctival membrane so unlikely to respond to topical antibiotic drops or cream. Also the eyes don't appear to have a discharge (although it is difficult to assess from photos)
I would also be concerned about Marek's- has she been vaccinated?

vaccinations do not mean that the chicken will not get the illness, but they will not get it too bad (i.e. they should not develop the tumours). However with the Mareks vaccine there is a timescale in which the vaccine must be used and this is around the 1 hour mark from first opening the vaccine.
Get the swabs done today and hopefully you will soon know one way or another - fingers crossed.
