Disappointing tomato taste
« on: July 09, 2010, 20:44 »
The first tomatoes are ripening, Sungold F1 and had my first taste tonight. I have to say i was disappointed actually. They've been fully ripe now for a couple of days but they taste nothing like the neighbours opposite...  :tongue2:

I've been feeding once a week or so with tomorite and water once a day (sometimes twice in very hot weather) so i'm wondering if i should leave them a little longer to sweeten up...

 ??? ???

What do others do?

May I ask, what is once a week or so?

ask the neighbours exactly how they treat theirs....compost, feed etc...even where their seed came from,

and do exactly the same as them next year :D

for this year leave some a bit longer and see if you think they are better, or worse....only your tastebuds can tell you ;)

Sorry. I guess when i really think about it, at least once every seven days, no longer. Too much?

Any more than once a week, yes. Especially if you are not going by the manufacturers directions. :D

i am following the instructions.
You are following the instructions so that isn't the cause.  I've grown tomatoes for many years with great success but in recent years the results have become more and more hit and miss.  Two years ago my Black Cherry was the greatest ever, last year it was horrible.

This year has been the worst ever. :(  I tend to blame the compost.
Cheese makes everything better.

I think the main point is missed, i.e. what is the variety?
I have grown Gardeners' Delight for many years and had various problems, grown both in bags and in soil but have never been disappointed with the flavour.

I did say in my first post, Sungold F1, usually a fantastic flavoured variety!

Are the tomatoes getting plenty of sun or are they hidden by the leaves most of the time?
I think the more sun the fruit gets the sweeter it is.
