How do I know if something's wrong?
« on: July 07, 2010, 13:11 »
My Beverley, - approx 20 wks old, was laying a small egg about every 2 days.  She stopped 2 weeks ago, nothing since.  She seems well, no lumps, no lice, eating normally.

Could the Fox visiting have put her off laying?

We clean out and move the run to fresh ground every week, and at the weekends they go free-range whilst we are at home.  (They have the best spot in the back garden in a little wild wood)

They are on layers pellets with a handful of corn & oyster shell, with treats at the weekend in the later afternoon.

Is it normal that young ones can stop laying and then start again later.  The other 3 I would think are a few weeks younger, as still very pale around the comb, so nothing from them yet.

Are we doing something wrong?

(She's a Bovans Nera, by the way)

I have a bovans nera. 5 years old and laying 4-6 eggs per week.

At only 20 weeks she is still quite young to be into full production.

Have you wormed them ?

Hi Aunty Sally

No I haven't wormed them.  I had assumed I didn't need to, but I will do now and see if that sorts things out.  (feeling slightly ill at the thought!!)

Thanks!

We only recommend flubenvet for worming.  Don't let anyone fob you off with verm-x !

Whoops!

What's wrong with vermex? This is what we have been using.  The breeder we brought them from recommended this product.

Just put verm-x into our search facillity and you'll see why we don't use it.

It only "helps" to prevent worms.  It fails, chooks get worms, verm-x does not kill them, chooks get ill.

Use flubenvet, it works against all worms including lung worm.

Thanks Aunt Sally,

We have had our chickens for a year and have been giving verm-x once a month.  I am going to farm shop tomorrow for corn so will get flubenvet as well.

Just when you think you have everything sorted you learn something new.  There is such a lot of information it is difficult to know which to follow.

Agree with Aunt Sally she is young and yes a visiting fox could have stressed her and stopped her laying. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
