Skimming jam... what to use?
« on: July 06, 2010, 18:40 »
I'm having a right jamathon at the moment, thanks to my jam-making-couldn't-be-simpler Tefal jam maker...

so far I have:

Strawberry jam
Strawberry and raspberry jam
Red/white/black currant and raspberry jelly (very proud of this as it is all from my garden!)
Cherry and red currant jelly

Question is, is there an easy way to skim the jam without the scum breaking up into unskimmable tiny bits?

I'm hoping to get 3 lots done tonight... apricot jam, plum and recurrant jam and raspberry jelly yummmm

Just skim off what you can with a spoon and then stir in a knob of butter....this disperses the scum  :)

Ah, thanks :)

Would about half a small pat (5g) be enough do you think?

I must be SO lazy - I don't bother - just give it a good stir up and jar it! You all make me feel guilty! :(

I don't understand why but this year I have made 4 different jams with no scum, every other year I've been scooping it off with a large spoon  I don't think I did anything different.
