Permanant broody hen!
« on: July 05, 2010, 20:19 »
I have a hybrid hen who is broody every other week! When she starts rosey I separate her not allowing her to nest for up to a week, then when she is out after a few days she's broody again. I make sure she eats well, but am now wondering if I should let her hatch some eggs. I feel I'm depriving her of being a mum! But I'm not sure it would stop her? Please advise?

try putting some ice packs under her to cool her down. the old fashioned way to break a broody, was to dunk her rear end in very cold water to cool them down, and break the broody cycle, they get warm and pluck out their feathers underneath themselves to keep the eggs warm.

we have used an ice pack instead, takes a couple of days, and seems to work.

think it through very carefully before you let her hatch. What will you do with the boys? Do you have the facilities to keep her seperate? Do you have a brooder just in case she rejects them when they hatch (it does happen - it did to me this year but luckily I had another broody who took over rearing them). If you keep all the chicks have you got enough room?
I am not meaning to put you off  but do want you to think things through thoroughly first  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Very unusual for a commercial hybrid to be so broody.  They've generally had it bred out of them over very many generations.

One of my warrens managed to brood away - but wasn't any good at sitting and gave up after a week. I think even when they go broody they rarely make the best mums for sitting, although I'm sure some have had success. As Joy says it is best to make sure you have everything ready in advance and know what you are going to do with any boys. If you do let her sit we will need chick photos - it is the law  :tongue2:

Thank you so much for your advice, i will try the ice pack first, if that dos'nt work I do have plenty of space and would love to try and hatch some eggs, but you are absolutely right of course, I have to think about the potential boys! I don't have a cock bird out of consideration for the neigbours.

I will let you know how I get on.
