Dianthus

I've never grown them before, but have 3 pots that were looking beautiful with dianthus, lobelia & alyssum. The dianthus has pretty much stopped producing new flowers and had started to grow seed pods. I have removed these, hoping it will kick start them into producing more flowers - or am I wasting my time, have they had it now?

Cut off all the spent flowers and trim back the whole plant by a little, say, another inch or so, and this should send out a 2nd flush of flowers. Alyssums, I find, will flower again later on their own.
