is it possible to grow fruit trees from seeds in the fruit we eat? i have just had a peach with my lunch and it just got me thinking as to whether i could grow trees from the stones.

if so how many years before they would produce fruit?

I grew a peach tree from a peach stone, but when we moved it was still only 5 years old, so we hadn't had much fruit from it, and I started to grow apples from seed in y office once, but they died!!  :(

mango from seed
bought some mangoes from asda, kept one a little too long and when we cut it open the stone in the midddle had split and there was the biggest seed I have ever seen, anyway we planted it and it is now about 8'' high with 6 leaves but we are not sure what we will get, does anyone think we will ever get fruit, tried to find info about it on the web but came up with zilch, any idea's.

I tried growing peaches from stones, but nothing happened. Then googled it and found I should have prepared them in various ways, from memory one way was to scratch them, and one way was to either put them in the fridge or the airing cupboard. Sorry to be so vague, but try googling and the info will pop up!!!

no way bonjives, we may be having funny weather but there's absolutely no way you'll be able to grow mangoes in south yorkshire, there's nothing about it online because it just can't be done. They're a tropical fruit so winter will be a real shock (i.e. it'll die if it goes below something like 6 degrees), it may be alive now as it assumes it is the rainy season.

Yes it is but IMHO not worth it, wait 7 years or so for an apple pip to grow into a mature enough tree then find out it what it taste's like.

Better to buy a guaranteed type with the correct rootstock for what you are growing and how  much space you have. In those seven years waiting for a pip you will have probably cropped for 6 with a known variety. Just my opinion of course  :D

RR has hit the nail on the head.  You will usually get a plant of some kind from a saved seed but it is likely to mature into a tree with entirely acceptable attributes (size, vigour, productivity, etc)

I got a coconut from the fair to germinate in the airing cupboard once - but that's another story... Did a mango too, but the shape was all wrong as I didn't pinch out the middle to make it bushy.

Recommend The Pip Book by Keith Mossman. Should still be available somewhere.
