Selling Excess Veg alongside my Eggs-Prices?
« on: July 02, 2010, 19:36 »
Hi,
I have not thought much about this before but I shall have a huge excess of veg this year-I wish to sell some along side my eggs.

At the moment I have salad potatoes,3 varieties of onions-and these are Huge, swiss chard, some carrots, broad beans, strawberries and so forth.

Trouble is I am unsure of how much to ask for them, they are all organic like my hen eggs, has anyone any experience of this and if so what do you charge?

Look forward to any advice please :)

Is there a farmers market near you? If so, go along and see what they are charging, then set your prices accordingly. :D

Not sure if this is right or not, but i thought that if you have a council allotment then you cant sell produce. Are you on a council allotment or just a back garden or something similiar? :)
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

I am on a council owned alottment, and although we are not supposed to "grow to sell", we can sell any excess produce. It just helps to recoup some of the costs.  :)

I find Farmer's Markets very expensive and people passing by don't expect to pay that from someone's garden gate.  Otherwise my eggs would be about £3 a dozen!

Are there any other people around that do a similar thing?  you can see what they are charging and either sell for the same price or slightly cheaper.

Also be careful about advertising as free range or organic!  I believe you have to be certified as organic and when we enquired about that a few years back, the Soil Association told us it would take about 5 years!

In my opinion, get a list of what your local farmers market charges and half it.
i want to major in colouring with an emphasis on crayons.

If you are regularly overproducing maybe you have too much land? Are there people on the waiting list for plots at your association and would you consider giving up some of your growing space so that another family can benefit from growing their own produce then you wouldn't have to bother with selling any.

Its just that allotments are supposed to be accessible to everyone who wants one and when some allotmenteers hold on to more than one plot they prevent others from enjoying the same rights and priveleges.

I bet i'll be popular with that one!
