Advice on blueberries please
« on: June 30, 2010, 21:48 »
Can anyone advise about my daughters' blueberries.  They are extremely healthy plants, in pots because we have chalky soil, two have berries and the third doesn't.  They have suddenly gone berserk and are throwing out long stems, about three foot.  Do we prune them back, if not when should they be pruned?  Obviously we need to feed them but what should we use?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've got 2 blueberries (different varieties); one is twice the size of the other but has only a third of the number of berries this year!  :nowink:

They don't really need pruning for the first few years other than a tidy-up of weak or crossing stems when dormant, and if the new stems are coming from below ground be thankful (more stems = bigger bushes = more fruit!)

I suppose I should recommend an ericaceous feed for them but mine get the very occasional handful of growmore and that's it (pelleted chicken manure tends to be slightly alkaline so not such a good idea.)

Keeping them well watered, preferably with rainwater is the most important thing but there doesn't seem to be much wrong with yours......

As for the non-fruiting one, is it possibly a variety which flowered much earlier or later than the other two and maybe didn't get pollinated very well?

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I thought the same on the non-fruiting bush. Is it just this year it hasn't fruited, or not at all?

Thanks for the infor.

New bushes last year, all the same variety, all growing equally well, just one not flowered and fruited this year unlike the other two.  They were planted in ericaceous compost I wondered whether she should prune them this year, but as you say no, okay.  They are always watered with rainwater, so we seem to have got it right.  Very many thanks.
