pourgettes or courgkins
« on: June 24, 2007, 15:19 »
If you remember a few days ago I told you how my pumpkin plants (kindly donated by a fellow allotment gardener) turned into courgette plants,  well I tackled the gardener on the subject and she said they didn't really look like courgettes either. On closer inspection they seem to be pourgettes or courgkins as you prefer. Apparently, she used some of last years seeds to start them off (got them all mixed up, she says) and we now have hybrids. Is that possible?

Yes and at the risk of repeating myself, this is what happened when my marrows got crossed with pumpkins.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you want to save seed from any of the cucurbits, they need to be grown well away from other members of the family.

Why should I have to grow them away from my wife?

Varies since the whole hybridisation is happening randomly - my bet is edible but not particularly pleasant.

Oh balls.  I remember thinking at the time that perhaps I shouldn't plant courgettes and pumpkins next to each other....

Just don't save the seed. The fruit this year will be OK, but there's no guarantee what mutation you'll get next!!

I'll say it again!!!!

The produce this year will be OK. It's the seed you save from it to grow next year that will produce your cross pollinated fruit.
