What can't you Grow???
« on: June 28, 2010, 20:26 »
From reading various posts we all seem to have a particular crop that no matter how hard we try we can't grow.

Mine is Peas   :( I have sown two full packets of kelvedon Wonder this season and got about 10 plants from over 600 seeds sown. Plotters either side can grow the blighters in abundance so it is not the soil.

How about you?

Dwarf French Beans for me. Two sowings came to nothing. I decided it was the seeds in the end, so bought a new pack, which I'm anxiously watching over to see whether they are in fact my nemesis, or just a bad seed batch

Onions and shallots.  All other plot holders seem to grown huge onions - ours just stay small.  Garlic is usually fine - no problems - but onions .......   We must be doing something wrong but cannot figure it out. :(

Problem crop is Garlic for me yet onions, shallots, leeks all fine. I planted my garlic in the late autumn early winter they had enough frost to promote cloving etc the tops grew nice and green about 3 weeks ago the tops went over and brown so I lifted one to see the results. I got one tiny bulb a little bigger than a walnut. Lifted the rest sadly the first one was the largest no idea why. There's always next year.

Mine is radishes too, three times we've tried and failed. :(

I even tried at work in the courtyard and they became snail food :(

Mines parsnips- numerous sowings; some in greenhouse, in veg patch at home, in allotment, under mini polytunnels, not in polytunnels- they never seem to come up; yet know our soil loves them as when inherited plot- end of March we pulled up a bounty of them left by the previous people (scrummy parsnip soup was had by all!)  :happy

My otherwise green fingers desert me when it comes to iceberg lettuce. I have no problem with cos, butterhead, loose-leaf or any other kind of lettuce so why on earth can't I grow icebergs :(
