If anyone out there is as "sad" as I am and is wondering how much rainfall it takes to fill your tank or water butt it's quite easy to calculate.

Measure the length and width of the water catchment area in centimetres (in my case half of the shed roof as it only has guttering on one side; you have to assume that all the rain will be successfully collected.)

Multiply the length by the width and then by 2.54 (1 inch in centimetres) and you have the number of c.c.'s that an inch of rain will deliver to your container.

(To convert c.c.'s to litres divide by 1000, to convert litres to imperial gallons divide by 4.54)

To make any use of this you need to know your local rainfall statistics; although averages are notoriously unhelpful (especially this year!) they can help you to work out how much water you are likely to be able to harvest each year and therefore plan your catchment strategy.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
