Sneezing chicken
« on: June 26, 2010, 06:54 »
Apologies if someone has already asked this question - I'm new to the forum! (and keeping chickens)
One of my 3 chickens is sneezing a lot. She seems Ok otherwise (although I think she may have some sort of lice/tic problem which I hope to treat this week - any suggestions for a product? Organic v non organic?)
Anyway, back to the sneezing - could the 2 be connected?  Is there anything I should be worried about/doing?  Any suggestions gratefully received!
thankyou

Fo the lice get frontline spray from the vet one squirt on the back of the neck and problem solved.  And the sneezing. Well when I first got mine one of them started sneezing and then they all got runny noses and blowing bubbles it was horrible do yours have any discharge from the nose? The vet gave us some antibiotics and after a week they all cleared up. If one gets sick you should treat them all else they'll  just keep passing it back and fourth. Good luck  :)

Thanks for the reply.  No, there's no discharge or any other problem.  I'll keep an eye on them and see what happens.

Well, I popped into the vets yesterday to get the Frontline. I also asked for some worming medicine for the chickens.  The vet, however, refuses to dispense anything without having examined them first.  I don't relish the thought of getting 3 birds, 2 of which refuse to be caught/handled, into a container, into the car and down to the vets for a once over. Please can anyone recommend a reputable on line site or other alternative source where I can get what I need?

Just take the one that is sneezing to the vet.  Tell him/her how many chicken you have and s/he should prescribe enough medication for everyone.

However you can buy Flubenvet (chemical wormer) online without a prescription.

I'd also heard that the vet wouldn't give Frontline for chickens so didn't specify the animal I needed it for.  However, they refuse to dispense any flea medication to anyone for any animal without having examined it/them first.
Thanks for the suggestions - I'll give them a go.

One of my girls was sneezing now & then a few weeks back.
Couldn't see which one it was as she sneezed when i wasn't looking.
Kept an eye on them all & for over a couple weeks now i haven't seen or heard a sneeze from any of them.
All look fine & are laying ok & seem quite healthy :)

When I discovered a couple of mine had lice it was 9pm on a Friday eve. I was so appalled I jumped in the car and went to Sainsbuy's to see if they had anything in their pet section to use until I could go to the vet or take delivery of an online order. However Sainbuy's stocked frontline for cats in their pharmacy. So the girls got treated that same evening! A couple of drops on the back of their necks onto the skin.

Hi there,
I got my Flubenvet from animalmedicines.co.uk for just under £15.00 free p&p. :D
I ordered it before 14.30 and it arrived next morning all the way from Scotland to Spalding. :)

Not seen it any cheaper, my vet was going to charge me £26.00.

Mick. ;)
