Would love tortoise's but don't think hubby would fall for the ' I spent a few hundred quid on these babies but they will keep the weeds down.' lol

Hi they can be an expensive outlay but once you have the correct set up ie NOT a vivarium then your only costs from then are suppliments, electric and possible vets costs they are a cheap animal to keep as they eat weeds, weeds and more weeds

If any one is thinking of buying one please please dont buy from a pet shop let me know if your interested and i will forward you details of uk breeders (who in some cases are cheaper) or rehoming lists. Most pet shop tortoises have been wild caught and imported    i also have a link for a petition to try and stop this if anyone is interested.

Sorry to hijack the thread

Kind regards Nicky

Hi your not totally wrong some breeds of tortoise are now endangered and it is these tortoises that are that need a licence but not all tortoises.

Hope that makes sense?

Kind regards Nicky

Anyway - getting away from tortoises and back to Russian Vines.....
I can't put weedkiller on it - it really would not be the thing to do. I might kill them, but the Russian Vine will be fine.......

If that is true, then it is actually illegal.  Cultivating bindweed is against the law.

Are you sure you're (k)not thinking about Japanese Knotweed?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

bind weed
Looks like bindweed to me.
Only thing you can do is keep pulling it as fast as it grows, not easy if the source is in some one elses garden.
Had a voluntary job recently clearing an old ladies garden and the house was just about buried under the bindweed, so they might get there just deserts.

I don't think it is - I think the poster was thinking about Japanese Knotweed. If it was, the bindweed police would be busy down our plot!

Going back to the original thread question, our neighbours had one when we moved in, it had grown all down the fence to quite a height, it had also grown up the house, I asked the new neighbour if he wouldnt mind cutting it down a bit, he did, but not a lot, so I then decided to get a builder mate in to check for any damage caused by it, he did and found it had, so we gave him the low down, as roots and top growth had caused damage and would most likley continue too, we asked if he wouldnt mind chopping it down, oh by the way who's your insurance with??? you know to send the bill to for the damage to be sorted. The whole lot came down within 3 weeks, better than any weed killer.
