Help me identify this pest
« on: June 24, 2010, 12:32 »
Yesterday I noticed that some of my Tsoi Sim were full of small beetles. I had noticed that there was something eating them, but I thought it was slugs (or maybe it's also slugs). These beetles were hiding where the flowering buds were coming up; they're grey-ish (like very dusty black beetles), and small (not more than 3mm I'd say).
They look pretty much like the picture of vine weevils, including the long mouth parts, but the descriptions of those gives a much bigger size. Do I have small vine weevils that will grow bigger, or something else?
My word, I was prepared to get some pests, but I can't believe how many different ones I can get in so few raised beds and pots. Is it always like this, or is this a particularly bad year?

I got flea beetles too, but those are smaller than these ones, and they're shiny and black while these look a mottled grey. Also, the flea beetles jumps out of the way; these ones let themselves drop in the soil, where it's really hard to see them.

They're not immature ladybirds are they? I saw one today and they do look a bit like a beetle and are a dusty grey but have some orange coloured spots on them.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Savbo, you're brilliant, that's definitely the one. Look and size match perfectly, and the oriental veggies I'm growing belong to the brassica family. And they do seem to be always on the flowering buds.
I'm so annoyed... I feel like ripping all the plants out and compost them, the more weevils I kill the more I find.
