Short tomatoes
« on: June 23, 2010, 22:05 »
My neighbour on the plot has half a dozen or so tomato plants in his greenhouse. This evening, he was complaining that they were flowering and setting fruit, despite only being 18 inches or so tall. He couldn't tell me what variety they are, but did say they're 50/50 cherry and normal tomatoes.

He's intent on nipping off the flowers and fruits, despite not knowing whether it's the right thing to do or not, in the belief it'll help them grow bigger. Personally, I'd leave them and be chuffed to have a crop, but who's right? Should you nip out flowers if the plant's still too short?

Tell him to leave the flowers on.  The plants will continue to grow and produce more flowering trusses as they do.

If he dissagrees with you just leave him to get on with it ::)

I wish I had his 'problem'  ::)
Because of the cold spring my toms spent too long indoors on the windowledges, so they grew quite tall before they grew their first flower truss :(

Mine are not very tall either but I don't care because they little tomatoes on them.  I also have a mixture of varieties and my cherry ones are taller than the "regular" tomatoes.  It might mean that they don't hit the roof of the greenhouse this year.

If this hot weather persists he should stop the plant after 5 or 6 trusses.
