Redcurrant Cuttings
« on: June 20, 2010, 21:22 »
There are several plot holders on our site with redcurrant bushes and the lads have said I am welcome to take as many redcurrants as I like. However,I'm not mad keen on taking there produce so I wonder if now would be a good time to take cuttings from the plants/bushes. This way I would be able to have my own crop in a year or two.
I wouldn't say I was the best manager for the job,but I would say I'm in the top one! (Brian Clough)

In the autumn, when the plants are boing pruned take off some woody shoots that are about 12 inches long. Clean them up removing any leaves, except for the top 4 inches, and dip the bottoms in rooting compound.
Make a slit in the soil with the spade and insert the cuttings with just the top bits showing. In the spring they should begin to make new growth and later in the year you can move them to their final positions.
