As some of you may know, our little Olive (a hybrid no less) has been sat on a dozen eggs for some time, in fact today is day 19 and it has gone so quickly. We have lost a couple of eggs, one to being trampled at an early stage and one being abandoned and had gone cold. The chap who got them for us is a 'retired' farmer and came up today to see how we were getting on. He asked if we would like to see how many eggs contained chicks. Obviously we were interested and this is what he did. A washing up sized bowl, full of quite warm, but not hot, water in which he then carefully placed the eggs whilst Olive was at toilet. Once the eggs had steadied, you could see at least 8 of them rocking as a chick inside moved. I was worried in case the chicks were at risk, but he assured me that he had done this sort of thing many times over the years himself.

Thought I would post this to see any comments you had - but it was great to know that we should have several chicks in a few days

very interesting! i have some blue eggs incubating and can't see as thing when candling, might try this, thanks.
