I started mulching the fruit on my plot with spent wood shavings from my chicken coop a couple of years ago.  My thinking was if I used them twice they only cost me half as much 

The first layer was stacked and composted for 6 months, but once a decent layer was down, I started chucking fresh stuff on top to tut-tutting from the older generation of plot holders and.........................

this was a pick today from a single Invicta gooseberry - 7.5 kg and I gave quite a few away down at the plot.  Well I couldn't walk away with this lot with little longing faces looking at me 



The 50p is so you can see they are decent sized berries as well.  If you keep chickens I'd recommend trying this.

I think the tut-tutting was because uncomposted wood chip was going down, but like I say it wasn't on bare soil and I reckoned by the time it worked it's way down it would be OK.

Some of our site are older gentlemen who've probably forgotten more than I will ever know but they are a bit stuck in their ways so they roll their eyes at my lazy girl, short of time quick fix methods 

I'm now going to upset them more by extending the mulch programme to my black currants  and raspberries

The method obviously works so why the grumpy old men act? Even blokes and women in their 70's can still learn a thing or two......pride is a silly old thing. Well done,I say.
