Pruning Tomatoes

Hi, I believe you have to prune tomatoes, I have looked at  a couple of videos but I still cant work out what is a sucker and what is not so I don't want to cut to much off!! Anybody know of a good site with pictures that may help me pls?

branches of tomatoes always come out in pairs (one each side of the main stem) and grow at right angles.  The suckers that you snap off grow from where the branch leaves the stem and grows up to the light ie mid way between the branch and main stem) You snap them off as soon as they grow, they look like a small leaf to start with, but if left look like a stem within days.  If you dont take them off immediately they look obviously wrong and can be removed later.  If left on your tomatoes will be smaller and your plant will look messy!

You can also plant the sideshoots for a later crop.

Hello fatcat,
Ive never heard of this can you do it with all tomato plants?Do you just pull the side shoot out and put in a pot of compost then? :)

That's all you do, they root very easily.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
