Where do you keep your feed?
« on: June 18, 2010, 21:29 »
Hi All (AGAIN) sorry!

where do you keep your food (pellets)?

outside or inside or both?

if you have both where would you preferentially keep them if you had one feeder?

Many thanks

I keep all my feed in a metal dustbin in the back garden, with a brick tied to the lid to stop the lid blowing away in windy weather.

sorry - I didn't put the question in the right way...

where do you put your feed for the hens to eat? i.e. inside the coop or in the run or both?  :)

I put their feeders inside the hen houses  :). I don't put them outside of the hen houses because it attracts rats.

There are 2 trains of thought on this subject.  Some will say if you put the feed INSIDE the coop it will attract vermin, others will say it attracts them more if left OUTSIDE!  I have 12 coops, arks and henhouses.  All the ones that are large enough have their feeders inside, but in the smaller ones where I have to put them outside, I find more vermin evidence and the wild birds are eatings about 3 kgs of feed a day!!
Little so and so's!  Soon they will be too fat to fly!

But the feeders that are outside are put into the polytunnel at night

Feeder under a covered area in the run suspended at vent height to discourage rats.  The coop is for roosting in, not living accommodation.  It's best to have two drinkers also outside but raised off the ground on legs or bricks not suspended so it spills.  Have two in case one is knocked over.

I have my food and water drinkers in the run,   when the girls go to bed, we sweep up all the spilt pellets and bring that and the water drinker into the house,   i have one of those feeders with the anti scratch cover on, i find this really does work, hardly any split pellets, especially with my amber star who insisits on trying to scratch every pellet out.   nickyx

Well our 3 hen houses are big enough for both  ::)

I keep my feeder and drinker in the run, the feeder is suspended under the covered area and the water is also under the covered area but it is on feet and placed on a paving slab. Both are brought in every night and washed ready to be filled again the next day and placed back in the run before the pop hole is open and the rush begins.

The wild birds here queue up to get to layers pellets, i might make one of these to slow them down a bit. http://www.woodworkingcorner.com/feeder.php

on einsode the coop and one outside which is taken in at night. Spilt pellets are mopped up and rats are deterred by another kind of pellet delivered at around 12 ft lbs behind the ear.
Now retired from the day job and working hard on my smallholding.

our coop isnt big enough to put food and water in they kept knocking the water over. Now they have water and food in the run under cover we take the food in at night. Our biggest problem is they scratch at the food and its wasting loads. Any suggestions?

I keep mine in the run but in a sealed bulk feeder with a spiral dispenser used for pheasants. The chooks have learnt to tap it if they want food, so its cut down on waste loads.
