Everythings bolting!
« on: June 16, 2010, 21:08 »
All my lettuce, spinach, salads, radishes have all bolted  >:(. Even my onions are starting to bolt .

Is it something I'm doing wrong? Too much water, too little?
First timer, NOT enjoying the backache anymore!

Not you - weather   ;)  Too many dips and spikes of temperature.  My endive, radish & lettuce have all gone too.  The chickens are having a field day.

Whereabouts in Tod d'you  live, Fletch?

My son used to live in Dobroyd castle and we regulars at Gordon Riggs  :D

We went to Riggs a few weeks ago and spent a fortune. Had to abort a trip to Hebden Bridge as we had no money left. And no space left in the car.

Nice place :D

All of a sudden my mizuna, beetroot, pak choi, swiss chard, mustard, rocket AND corriander bolted!!! Funnily, not the lettuce.
We've been eating all the flower stalks in salads but I just hope the plants carry on growing .....or will I  have to re-sow......? :(

Bolting onions can be saved by snapping off the seed head which is just starting - it resembles a garlic scape (seed head). Note which ones you trimmed so that you can use them first as they won't keep as well as others which haven't bolted or tried to seed.

Odd that your chard bolted as it's usually a biennial for seeding, same with beets.

OK I win the bolted veg contest - this is my white chard.  Last time I visited the plot (which I admit was a week ago - work does so get in my way  ::) ) it looked like it was going, but I was met with this stupendous sight today

1 full compost bin later

You've definitely got my vote, New Shoot   :D

I've never grown white chard before. I just stick with the ruby red swiss chard which is far less prone to slugs and such than Bright Lights, and it's never bolted for me, not even in my hotter summers.

Silly me Trill...my chard was planted LAST year so it SHOULD be flowering!!! Already planted more.
Now I've got scapes on my shallots.......very tasty too!
Anyone tried mizuna flowers? Quite yummy if a bit tough......
A mammoth re-seed this week-end methinks!
