Watering / feeding toms
« on: June 15, 2010, 20:15 »
Yesterday, I bought some long gravel trays to put under the tomato pots in the growhouse. I've filled them with water and feel happier now that they are getting water whenever they need it as the water sits in the tray ready to be drawn up.

BUT: how do I now get the food into the plants? Before, I just included it dilute as part of their watering each/every other day and watered from above.

Do I add it to the trays somehow or keep feeding from above? Or doesn't it reallt matter?!  ::)

I would add it to the pots.  I have some tomatoes in pots in capillary matting, but I still water and feed the toms from above.

Water your tomatoes from the bottom and feed from the top.  The roots have different functions at the top and bottom.  The lower roots take in water and the upper ones take in nutrients.
Cheese makes everything better.

That's great, thanks Ice (and barbarella!).

I knew I'd heard something like that before being said and just couldn't find it.

Does it matter if the diluted feed gets onto the foliage?

should be fine but you might get a bit of leaf scorch if it is sunny and the leafs are wet
