Onions ?
« on: June 15, 2010, 19:44 »
Mine are getting near to the size I want, they are red onions.
What do I need to do with them once I pull them up ?

I have seen things on here where people are drying them ?

how can I store them to make my stock last ?

any tips greatly recieved...

DON'T pull them up unless you want to eat them straight away. They are not mature yet.

They'll tell you when THEY are ready, by flopping over. They can then be gently eased out of the ground & left on top to dry for a couple of days, before being lifted and full dried out.

There's many cunning ways of hanging them up/laying them out to dry, folk used many ways last year, including pegging them to a clothes airer, I'm sure some more unusual ways will surface this year.

They need storing in a cool, but frost free, airy place. Light need not be excluded.

Were these winter planted or spring planted? Not even my winter ones are ready for drying off yet.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When you do lift your onions and dry them out, you can try plaiting them.  Try this link: http://www.thebigworld.co.uk/how-to-string-onions.htm
