Swedes to follow Garlic
« on: June 15, 2010, 15:58 »
I am anticipating lifting my garlic toward the end of July so am thinking to sow some more Swedes so they are ready to plant in behind the garlic.

Does anyone else have veggies/ideas waiting in the wings for following the big garlic lift?

as far as i am aware, swedes are sown where they are to grow, and not be transplanted

I transplanted swedes earlier in the year at about 3 or 4 inches high and they now seem to be bulking up OK. Not sure if the same would apply now with a shorter growing season though?

Just lifted my garlic now, following will be my winter beetroot and more salad stuff. Swede is a brassica and brassica's were grown on the bed last year so for me it's a no, no.

I have always sown Swedes in module trays and planted out with no problems but never this late in the year (after Garlic harvest; probably July). The Swedes I transplant will have been brought on in 3.5 inch pots and hardened off before planting.

I don't expect large produce but they are handy winter veggies; especially after a frost.

My Brassica and Onions go in the same beds so I am ok with this.

Isn't it a bit early to be lifting garlic? Does the whole plant have to yellow/dry off before lifting?

It's early for us in the midlands.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My garlic lives in a tube in the 'fridge, and I can lift it out whenever I like!  :tongue2:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

My swedes were sown outdoors about 2 weeks ago and are now germinating. I usually sow them much earlier but they have been ready well before winter so have delayed it a bit this year. Aidy is right - they are a member of the brassica family - so they should be sown in a bed that was used for peas, beans etc, then they are followed by garlic the next year, not the other way round. It would be interesting to know just how much difference it makes in reality to someone who hasn't got the room to rotate their veg.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
