Tomato feed/Tomorite
« on: June 15, 2010, 14:23 »
Hi everyone - I need recuing again  ::)

I am growing tomatoes, runner beans, courgettes, onions, garlic, potatoes, cabbage, spring onions and beetroot.

I also have herbacious flower beds.

I have noticed that my tomatoes and potatoes are starting to flower - and here is my question -

What can I use liquid tomorite for, and how often?

My Dad says feed every week, but I would like to check on this.  I have heard people say you can use it on everything, others say not.

Can anyone help me out here?

I use it on tomatoes and courgettes, aubergines and squash/pumpkin as directed on the bottle  :) Occasionally it gets used on the basket flowers  :D
I've never used it for the other things on your list........

Tomato fertiliser is OK for anything which needs to produce lots of flowers, such as annual plants and those listed by MOS.  The root and brassica crops on your list have different nutrient requirements and therefore tomato food isn't the best thing to use (won't do any particular harm but it's rather a waste of food).

The dosage rate and frequency will be on the bottle.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thank you chaps.

I have done a bit of research and found a good article on NPK - so I understand a little more now.

Can you buy fertilizers that are high in phosphate for potatoes, parsnips etc?

You can get potato fertiliser easily enough - we sell it at the lotty association shop but I've seen it in commercial outlets.

NPK stands for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Plants also need magnesium or the foliage goes yellow.
Tomorite has high potassium which is good for flowers and fruit. For brassicas you need higher nitrogen which stimulates leaf growth. Too much nitrogen in the roots bed leads to lots of greenery and no root which I learned through experience last year when I ended up with very healthy, green, bushy celeriac and swede plants but no root!
I used to be confused about potassium and potash but they are the same thing....you can get potassium chloride or potassium sulphate (sulphate of potash) quite cheaply and use on tomatoes, fruit trees and bushes, flowering plants and things like cougettes....basically everything where you want flowers/fruit.
I think this may include potatoes as they are the same family as tomatoes.
I'm sure there's info on the site....
