Cosmos and Antirrhinum
« on: June 13, 2010, 20:07 »
Hi I have grown some Cosmos and Antirrhinum  from seeds and planted them on the Lottie.
I have never grown flowers before being Moe interested in growing things I can eat.

Are Cosmos and Antirrhinum Perennials or Annuals?

Thanks FB

With cosmos I think it depends on the variety you have.  Antirrhinum are half hardy perennials usually.  I'm surprised it didn't mention this on the packet.

common cosmos are annuals and antirrhinum are perennials, but not reliably so if we have a bad winter.
I'd cut them back a bit in autumn and keep your fingers crossed ;)

Thanks to you both for the replies.
The seeds were freebies without any real growing instructions.

Get more cosmos freebies by saving the seeds from when the flowers have gone, leave the last flush of flowers on there [don't deadhead the last 5 or 6] and they will dry up and you can collect these and sown them next spring.

I had a volunteer antirrhinum which self-seeds spectacularly so now I've got lots of them!

Can't say I've noticed them being perennials but it's hard to tell with them seeding so prolifically!

The Cosmos I have grown were bought as annuals and have behaved as annuals (very good though!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
