Garlic advice please...
« on: June 13, 2010, 12:04 »
I planted my garlic in November and pulled one yesterday just to see how they were getting on. It's basically one large unsegmented bulb, no cloves. Am I simply too early or have I just got it horribly wrong?  ::)

first time, you might have guessed!

I think? hope you are too early :) They don't start to split until the last month or so, it seems to me.
The tops start to go a bit manky looking (technical term!) when they are ready for lifting.

Enjoy your green garlic but IMO you need patience for the rest  8)

Yeah... Both Titchmarsh and Klein say you can pull from June, but you're right.

I was just worried they wouldn't split...

Garlic needs 30 days of cold temperatures to form individual cloves and you've certainly had that since you planted  ::). A bit more patience is all you need.
I did the same last week though as my top growth is going a lot manky. I have got individual cloves so will be harvesting soon  :D

In 2008 I planted out my garlic in November and harvested it on 30 June 2009 and it was fine.  This year's crop was also planted in Nov and the tops are yellowing nicely, so another two or three weeks in the ground sounds good.

Last year I picked mine and peeled one of the bulbs and would swear it was not made of cloves - just one big bulb. However after cutting cross ways I was able to see that there actually were bulbs but because it was still "wet" they were hard to identify. I think we should have had enough of a cold spell to get them to form cloves - perhaps leaving them to dry might show up the separate cloves.
