what type of earlies are you growing, i would say let the flowers die off before you consider digging them up. 

Today I put some celery plants in the old wheelbarrow previously occupied by first earlies but the tatties on the plot will be followed by leeks. You might get away with runners if you've got them already growing in pots somewhere.
