Storing radish? going soft.

Ok...why is it when you buy radished from the supermarket they store for ages in the little bag in the fridge and are still fresh and crunchy.

my organic home grown ones unless i eat them by the next day after picking are all soft and wrinkly? ( purple ones)

Am i doing something wrong? or is it normal..can i store them better?

Not sure on this Dan, just checked mine that was picked on sunday and they are still fine and Iknow in the past they stay good for a while, my only thoughts would be that you have in some way forced them, perhaps too much water and as soon as they are picked they are losing it. sorry cant help beyond that. The way I grow mine is in the greenhouse, this was mainly to beat the CRfly, I just sown them in a bucket and water every 3rd day unles it is really hot then may every other day.

Might be the answer right there ... the little bag.

We have a plastic salad spinner which is a very handy little gadget.   Lettuce (and indeed radish) keep for ages if you spin off the water and then leave a little lying in the bottom of the spinner.  Seems to keep the humidity dead right.

Found this with lettuce too.  I have found i I wash the salad stuff straight from the garden and keep it in an airtight box after shaking most but not all the water off then they keep for about a week.  some salad leaves kept good for 10 days. cool, damp and airtight seems to be the answer.  or eat them straight away which is also good!

... bags ... an absolute godsend in the summer.  You can re-use them, they come in loads of different sizes and the really do exactly what it says on the packaging.

No wrinkly radishes with these babies I promise

Might be worth trying tinfoil - it works a treat on celery and keeps it fresh for weeks!!!

I've often wondered about those bags from Lakeland Wellies, so thanks for that, wondered if they work.  Do you think they have chemicals in them though.  I love Lakeland have a shop in Chichester, bit pricey though.  I have amongst other things their tube squeezers for me arthritis, microwave saucepans, and a salad spinner.

I did ask the question about chemicals ...

... and the answer was a resounding no.

But I can't quite remember what it is in them that works, something like a mineral that absorbs whatever it is that veggies produce that make them go off.  And if you put in a piece of kitchen towel it absorbs the moisture and makes the bag last longer, so you can keep reusing it.
