runny poos for over a week
« on: June 10, 2010, 17:41 »
As the title says one of my 3 birds has had watery ,browny ,poo for over a week. She is disinterested in things and spends all day in the nestbox unless I force her out. She does eat occasionally and drink but she is not interested in pellets. The other 2 birds are housed and fed the same and are fine. I think she has stopped laying but not 100% certain. Any ideas for treatment and should I continue to 'encourage' her to leave the next box as she will spend all day and night in there if I left her. Poultry friendly vets don't seem too close to hand (harrogate) but I know a vet who I could speak to if it is necessary.

How old is she?

Are you able to post a photo of her poo?

if she has watery poos and has had for a while she may be becoming dehydrated.  Have you felt under her wing to check her temperature and then compared that to another hen using the same hand? Is her comb still bright red? Do her eyes look bright and alert? Is she hunched up? Have you felt her abdomen to see if she is egg bound - does she walk like a penguin? What does her crop feel like?
I would seek medical advice - she may need worming or it could be more serious.
Staffies are softer than you think.

One of mine has been producing very watery poo for about a week too. She's her usual perky self though and still laying so I put it down to the very hot weather we've had and the fact she was drinking a lot, they were recently wormed so I'm pretty sure that wasn't the reason. Today she seems to be back to normal. Is your hen broody and not eating? I read somewhere that lack of food can cause watery poo especially if it's hot weather, can you put her somewhere cooler than the nest box for a while?

My girls had very watery poo last week.
It was only for a few days, but it was very hot then & all of them didn't seem to eat as much.
I put it down to the weather as they were drinking more & still are.
Mine were wormed a couple weeks ago.
None i mine stayed in the coop & were all doing normal chicken things whilst there was watery poo present.
It might be worth getting a vet to look at her if you are worried.
I would if it was me just for piece of mind.
