tomatoes looking ill, with photos. help?
« on: June 09, 2010, 18:47 »
hi all, my tomato plants are looking a bit sickly, the two older plants are by far the most affected but some of the ones a month younger are showing signs.  the main points are:

1) leaves curling upwards
2) purplish tint to veins
3) lower leaves are worst affected, gettting better as you look up the plants, tips are almost unaffected
4) lower leaves are dry and crinkle when squeezed.

they have fruit on them and fruit seems fine, swelling nicely, as i say the top new growth seems fine and they are growing ok

i have been feeding them tomato food once a week for a month or so (following directions), they have been watered regularly, (possibly a little too much)? i've stopped watering for time being as grow bags are quite damp.  one thing i did do is follow someones advice and sprinkle some (handfull) of ash from bbq on the soil.

here are some pics, any advice would be very well received :

They look as though they have gone blue with cold to me.  They will grow out of it when the weather warms up.

That's what it looks like to me as well  :)

All the toms in the garden are fine but the overflow went down the lottie and they look like that, a bit more exposed there I suppose :)

Don't worry, they will recover. Mine all went like that and i feared the worst. They have caught a chill over night.

may also be leaf scorch, if they have been in intense sun. Try giving them some shade in the form of netting or use cool glass to paint outside, I use diluted matt emulsion.

It is amazing the power of recovery that tomatoes have.  I have found that provided the problem is just environment, they usually receover when conditions pick up.

I decimated my tomtoes this year by a combination of forgetting to open the greenhouse door, and forgetting to close it.  Earlier in the year I put them out when the weather was getting warmer and accidently cooked them inside the greenhouse.  I then had the opposite problem by leaving the door and vents open during some heavy frosts.  I stripped all dead leaves off which left the main stem about 2 feet high bald with no foilage at all.

Since then they have sprung back to life, flowered and set fruit.

My suggestion (admitidly from a careless gardener) is strip off all dead/dying leaves, drop the watering right down for a while and improve the temperature they are in.  Just don't forget to give them air when it gets sunny   :D

thanks for all your advice, looks like i dont need to panic yet!  :(

have cut away bad leaves, not completely bare, have left the top healthy ones, will try to remember to open door and window during day and shut them at night.  fruit is swelling fine though so fingers crossed will be ok.

please dont let me get blight this year >:(  i have a box of dithane ready though !!
