Woodlice in strawberries!
« on: June 09, 2010, 12:07 »
Help - I just picked a wonderful crop of strawberries but at least half of them were destroyed by woodlice.  What's more, they were still there in their hundreds.  Lots of them inside the actual strawberies!
Can anyone recommend anything to treat with which would be safe for the crop?  The plants are already growing on black membrane.  I always expect problems with slugs and snails but not usually woodlice!
Would be grateful for any advice

I think you'll find that your problem is with the slugs.

Woodlice will go into the nice juicy hole left behind by a slug.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Woodlice do not need any help from slugs as they are quite capable of getting into a strawberry on their own.
The cure is the same as for slugs , slug pellets. I do not like using slug pellets but it`s that or no strawberries.

Thanks for that.  I didn't know slug pellets were for woodlice too?  I already have those down, though I also don't lreally like using them.  It's better than the alternative though,  losing all my crops!

Did a bit of research on this & yes, they can get into very ripe, squishy fruit by themselves, but often it's through a hole made by slugs or birds.

Something has been eating my basil and so far the only thing I've found is woodlice and loads of them too. Do you think they could be the culprits as the basil is in a raised herb bed and there is no sign of anything else at all, the other herbs have not been touched at all?

Re the basil - I actually think woodlice will eat anything!  Last year my tomatoes were attacked by them too, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are the culprits.
