Broad Bean problems
« on: June 08, 2010, 21:12 »
Hi I'm having problems with my broad beans at the moment.

The plants all have masses of flowers but for some reason the flowers are starting to drop - without leaving the baby beans behind (IYSWIM!).  The plants are well watered and seem otherwise healthy.

Anyone have any ideas please? Thanks

Sorry I don't know what IYSWIM means!  But I think it sounds like your flowers haven't been pollinated - do you have many bees where you are?

taking tops out can help but without a picture not sure yours are ready for that. Keep watch as pods may yet swell behind the flowers

Perhaps IFYSWIM = if you see what i mean. That's just a guess but it nearly fits the letters

Thanks for replies

First, I did mean "if you see what I mean" by IYSWIM - thought I would save time - but I have had to type it anyway now!  :D

We dont have so many bees around - I've been trying to get more to visit with a new planting scheme! - so that may be the problem, especially as I have now found that there are a few beans coming finally.

I'd better get out and buy that dwarf buddleia I've just seen advertised  :)

Mine did this last year then they seemed to have a 2nd phase and loads of fruit formed.  Maybe just early-season-itis!  Another thing Ill be doing this year is cutting them back after 1st harvest - I got a really late 2nd crop  8)

Right back down to the ground.  Never heard of anyone doing this - was just pure luck that I left them in!

My broad beans usually do this, then start to set later on and I get a good crop.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My first time with broad beans and the same thing is happening to mine.

It cannot be lack of bees, OH has five very healthy hives, so we have hundreds of thousands of honeybees.

Will wait and see.

When is the best time to take out the tops, I have had conflicting input from friends, one I think too early as he is more interested in eating the tops in salad.
