Quick Slug Q...
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:22 »
I put down some pound shop pellets last night to try and stave off the hungry little so-and-so's.

This morning there was loads of 'em laid about in little pools of there own snot.  :D

My question is do I pick them up or not?

Some of them were still moving, although obviously were not feeling too grand. I picked them out and squished them this morning but that was more for me  :D Should I just leave them?

Cheers in advance...

Simon

If you move them, the birds won't eat them & pick up the poison also.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Cheers!

I'll pick them up then.

I've got a 'pet' family of Blackbirds that must live somewhere closeby. I've pretty much raised them. When I was digging the plot over the mum would sit a few yards away (sometimes only a foot) and patiently wait for me to turn over the next clump so she could grab the worms. Sometimes she'd have that many she could hardly take-off! Wouldn't want to harm them. Mind, if they were any sort of friends they would have concentrated on finding the slugs instead of my bleedin' worms!  ::)

I pick ours up with an old pair of kitchen tongs  I hate the feel of them. I go out at night after a rain or watering with my tongs and a little bucket and pick up any that i can see, snails as well   I would love to use pellets just for the ease of it but we have so many toads about and i would hate to hurt those

If you use sunken plant pots on some plants that need watering to their roots you might try this one.

Sink the pot as usual, brim level with soil surface, drop in some wilted Comfrey (slugs and snails love this as it goes oozy as it breaks down) leaves and then drop another plantpot the same size into the sunken pot, or pladce a slate half way over the plant pot top.

This leaves a nice little shelter down the pot hole that slugs can hide under. You then go along and pick them out. What you do with them after that is up to you.

No slug pellets used, no danger to the water table or wildlife and everyone's happy.

I came up with this idea when I attracted frogs to the plot (wildlife pond) and noticed they were lying in wait inside the watering pots. I just place a slate halfway over the pot brim and the slimy meals hide under the slate to be picked off later as the frog patrol starts their night shift.
