Growing squash and courgette in gro bags?
« on: June 05, 2010, 08:18 »
I have some squash and courgette plants (free bbc dig in seeds) that i need to plant out somewhere but cant get them in the plot as its not ready yet and space at home is very very limited. I was wondering if i could plant them in grow bags as it seems the only option left to me. If they can be grown in grow bags how many per bag please.

thanks
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

My grow bag says you can plant 3 courgettes & marrows per bag.

But I don't believe it. Personally I'd go for 2.

But probably wise to listen to the grow bag (rather than this old bag).

I'd agree with Loubs  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would think that 3 would be a bit tight to be honest as they do grow quite wide.  Loubs' advice is good!

Morning all. I've planted squashes in two growbags stacked one on top of the other with corresponding holes cut to let the roots go through. This gives additional depth of soil and water retention. Two squashes per double growbag. (Method recommended in Joy Larkom's book.)

I'd tip the growbag on end, like a big pot, rather than flat, and plant just 1 in it.

Im short of growing space this year, I'll be filling a few  75ltr tub trugs and plating squash in those.  They can then crawl over the rubble I call a garden

yes you can grow them in tubs but they will need a lot of watering, and possibly something to weigh them down in strong winds, as they get quite top heavy   :D

I've got some spare plants so I'm going to try them in the bags I got for planting potatoes last year.  The potatoes were rubbish so I won't be using them for that again.  I going to use half rotted garden compost and half potting compost and see what I get.  The rest will go on the allotment and I'm going to train them up a trellis as they take up half the plot otherwise.

My cougettes are in potato bags (I had a low harvest of spuds last year too!) and they love it! Had our first ones today.
My squash and cues are in BIG pots and I've put a newspaper folded up in the bottom to keep in the water. It drains slowly and the paper rots down eventually and saves daily watering......
I find putting manure, topsoil, my compost, fbb and some bagged compost is a good mix. Quite theraputic mixing it up by hand in a wheelbarrow. Like making pastry....... ::)

I use full bags of compost as more depth and more feed than a grow bag and put one squash or two courgettes in each BUT be prepared to feed throughout the season. Sink a empty plant pot alongside each plant so water and feed goes to roots and dont get foliage wet if you can avoid it.
