Rhubarb tea for brassicas ?
« on: June 04, 2010, 21:13 »
Do you really put rhubarb tea on your plants. I put a few chopped leaves in a 2 gallon bucket of water a fortnight ago and have just lifted the lid on it to see how it was brewing.
The first suprise was the hundreds of hairy maggots seething on the top of the island of mushy leaf matter.
The second suprise was the smell which i think could be matched by about 3 dead horses.

Does it really go on veg you are going to eat. If the cabbage whites will not eat anythng  sprayed with it perhaps they have the right idea. :tongue2:

Or do i just wait a while till it calms down a bit. :)

Officially it's illegal as it's not licensed as a pesticide.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Judging by the maggots its not a pesticide, just very stinky  :)

It's a stinky pesticide, and still technically illegal  ;)

Ignore the illegal bit. The important thing is it doesn't work. Not on my brassicas anyway.

Peeing on my compost is probably illegal as it's not a recommended method of effluent disposal but I'm still going to do it.

Ignore the illegal bit.

As previously and repeatedly stated on this forum we cannot endorse illegal activity.  Please do not continue to condone or encourage this.

It's not the simple talking about it that is the problem.

However, the promotion of its use or telling others to ignore the rules is the same thing as encouraging it, and it has long been the approach on this forum that we do not condone / encourage suggestions which contravene the law.

I did read somewhere you boil the leaves for 20 minutes to make the tea!!

Regards it being illegal, what harm is it doing to the environment :tongue2:
It all depends what you put into the ground, to what you get out

I am not having a laugh.

It is not a question of harm to the environment.  It is a question of what is legally allowed.

It is against the law to use as a pesticide any product which is not licensed.  Home-made pesticides are not licensed and are thus illegal.

As previously advised, we cannot and do not condone this.  What you choose to do in the privacy of your own garden is entirely up to you.  But we have a responsibility to ensure that the correct information is given to those who wish to a) be properly informed and b) comply with the law.

This has been repeatedly discussed on this forum in the past, if you choose to do a search rather than just stick your tongue out, Coach.

I shall now lock this thread as the OP's post has been answered and all the information which needs to be there is there.
