Using Limestone flour
« on: June 04, 2010, 17:58 »
All my hens are now laying thin shelled eggs.  I'm changing their food and I'm going to give limestone flour a go.  Can anyone tell me how I should give it (eg. mixed it with their food or alone), how much and for how long?  thanks

I think I've seen it mentioned on the forum that you can give a small amount on a grape.  You would then give it to them for about 5-7 days.  Don't take my word for that though but I am sure someone will come along and give the proper details.
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

mix a couple of teasponns in with their pellets or mash, if you are using pellets, you can put a few days supply in a bucket, add a couple of teaspoons of cod liver oil then mix to coat the pellets, the flour will then stick to the pellets and the cod liver oil helps them to digest.

alternative is a pigeon soluble calcium which is added to their water

I've been using Davinova C for about 6 weeks but it's not made a difference.  Someone told me that they might not be absorbing it and limestone flour might help with absorption.

Giving it on a grape is not an option.  It's a mad scramble and pecking, so I have to separate and if I do that they won't take a grape until they get back to the pack, and so it repeats!

if you give them all half a grape each but only put the limestone flour on the one for the girl who might need it then you may be ok.
Staffies are softer than you think.
