Tendergreen Broccoli
« on: June 03, 2010, 10:27 »
Another newbie question...  I have some Tendergreen Broccoli (I think it's the same type as the tenderstem) that has just started to produce a head. How should I harvest it? Will it produce more after I cut the first one, and if so for how long? I grow my veggies in a couple of small raised beds in my back garden, and since the space is so little I don't want to waste it on plants that are done producing...

I wait until the central stem gets to approx 2 inches then cut it off this encourages the side shoots to start sprouting, mine produced right through until late september and i found I was picking enough for a meal for 2 adult humans and 4 voracious parrots every 2nd day!! :D

A slightly different response from me - I'm just about to pick my Tendergreen central stems this weekend, they are no more than 1" across max.

Tendergreen is a new variety for me, but I understand that it has very narrow heads, more like early sprouting broccoli than calabrese, so it may never reach 2"!

You won't get much now, but pinching them out now will encourage the side shoots, which should give you your main crop
BoH
if only I knew yesterday what I know today...

Yes, it doesn't grow as thick as 2" - not even the ones you buy at the supermarket.
I harvested the first batch, and it tasted lovely - better than the supermarket ones!!!
