Help...damned weeds
« on: June 16, 2007, 22:46 »
Just been down the allotment now the rain has stopped, the things I have planted are coming on lovely, but so are the weeds.
I spoke to a regular who identified ground elder and lambs tail? and recommended either using a flame gun, weed killer or dig the lot and plant potatoes..
I would go with potatoes but is there still time to plant them and if there is what variety should I plant and where will I find them at this time of year.

Any pointers on this matter would be be much appreciated or any other suggestions would also be help full..

Many thanks Phil
if in doubt ...brew up

We have had ground elder in the garden it can be a right pig to get rid of.

I would go for a good dose of roundup or something similar, be prepared for it to grow back and then you can dig out the stragglers if you want or respray.

In my mind it's to late for spuds now, but you could try if you can get any.

Lamb's tail ??  What is that please?

Well you could plant early potatoes but you'd have an heckuva job finding seed.  You'd also struggle to store them overwinter (White or Red Duke of York a possible exception).

That said ... why?  You say your stuff is growing well.

I have only managed to plant out around a quarter of my allotment, got stuff coming on at home and it was all rotavated ready for planting.
but it looks like a lot of self setting stuff as emerged after the rains recently, potatoes plants and Jerusalem Artichokes by the dozen, plus the weeds that look like small cabbage plants, these are what I think the locals called Lambs tail...
