radish grubs
« on: May 28, 2010, 21:26 »
Help! My radishes are being destroyed again! :(
Some wormy thing tunnels into them I can't grow winter varieties at all as they're just full of tiny white wormy things :tongue2:
Is there any kind of control? I used to use Bromophos but that's disappeared
Would like to be organic if possible-but I want me radishes  >:(

Root maggots are the larva of a fly which lays its eggs at the base of the plant. When the egg hatches the maggot digs in feeding on the root. In a root crop like radishes,  which isn't in the ground long, you'll see the damage when you harvest as the maggot is likely still there in the radish. About the only defense is row covers edged in soil mounds so the flies can't slip in. The maggots will also live in soil that's not particularly fertile so keep adding compost and manure to build up your soil.

As trilly says, they may be soil bourne as well as egg, normally cabbage root fly as raddish is a brassica. Keep them very well watered so they grow very quick and less likely to be attacked, the fly dont like wet/ moist soil, preffering dry to lay eggs.
I found several types more resistant than others.
