with you JayG - pencil thickness !!! if only - mine are all on a diet  skinny minnies the lot of them perhaps they dont like the colour of the cat litter tray or they will grow into very slim elegant leeks - onions from seed were the same skinny efforts and not putting on any weight in the plot either - dont think I'll bother with spring onions they proabaly wont even germinate  :D

I got my spring onions to germinate reasonably well but their biological set of growing instructions seems to be missing all but the first chapter!

They make my leek seedlings look huge; I have put them side by side in the hope they will shame each other into doing better but they all just sit there quietly sniggering at me!  :(  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

C'mon - share the litter tray secret - what is it where do I look?  My leeks have always  been like blades of grass and take ages to germinate - enlighten!!

Sow the things really early to give them time to develop.... like what I did not do for the last two years!

Giving the little things a feed of anything to hand - chicken manure pellets / tomato feed.

Mine are beautiful this year - but on a diet  :(

Have a look in the "Growing Stickies" forum - lots of useful stuff in there.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

my leeks still look like tall grass in the cat litter trays i started in april.. No where near pencil thickness yet :(

I think they were getting too hot in the conservatory though so are all outside now.. seemed to enjoy a little feed.. i just used miracle grow as had it to hand

My early potatos seem a little late anyway so wont have the space to plant them for a few weeks.. lets hope the sun does them good :)

April is late to sow the seed.... according to my father who always grew them for me to plant out.

He put his into a large deep tray in late Autumn!

Mine went in this Spring - no pencil thickness though!  :(

The sooner planted out from now on the more chance of growing into a decent size but I think lots of people wait until their potatoes are lifted and replace with leeks.

My best results have been from planting out in late may / early June but too small this year  ;)
